Greece police conduct nationwide traffic checks, issuing helmet and DUI penalties

Greek police carried out a series of targeted road‑safety checks from 22 to 28 June 2026 across several regions. In Central Macedonia, 733 inspections recorded 62 violations for non‑use of helmets by motorcyclists and users of light electric vehicles. In Western Macedonia 232 checks found 9 helmet offences, while Thessaly’s police logged 351 inspections with 42 violations, including 50 offences by electric‑vehicle riders. The campaign, titled “Zero tolerance on helmet non‑use,” enforces a fine of €350 and a 30‑day license suspension for offenders, with a €30 fine for electric‑vehicle drivers.

In Attica, a parallel operation focused on alcohol‑related driving offences. Over the same week, 25 938 breath‑alcohol tests were performed, resulting in 217 violations and the arrest of 10 drivers for exceeding legal limits. The same checks also identified 7 794 other traffic‑code breaches such as speeding, mobile‑phone use, and failure to wear helmets. Authorities immobilised 702 vehicles and revoked over 1 200 driving licences.

The combined enforcement actions aim to reduce road accidents and promote compliance with the new traffic code (Law 5209/2025).
