Greek police investigate telephone scams that defrauded elderly of cash, gold and jewelry

Police in Greece uncovered two telephone‑fraud schemes that targeted elderly women by posing as accountants. In Ihgoumenitsa, investigators said the gang persuaded victims to hand over cash, gold and jewellery, claiming the money was “old” and needed replacing. The scheme yielded about €180,000 in cash and jewellery worth roughly €4,000. A man identified as the “collector” was arrested on July 3 and his home was searched, resulting in the seizure of €450 and a motorcycle used for the visits.

A similar case was reported in Pieria, where a fraudster called a senior woman, pretended to be a bookkeeping employee and convinced her to surrender 50 gold pounds, jewellery valued at €10,000 and €750 in cash. Police continue to investigate both incidents and have issued public warnings urging citizens not to trust unknown callers claiming to be accountants or tax officials.
