Volos police officer arrested for bribery and suppressing traffic fines

An officer serving at the Volos Transport Department has been arrested for bribery, abuse of power, breach of duty, and issuing false statements. Following a methodical investigation by the Internal Affairs Directorate of Security Forces of Northern Greece, the officer was caught operating a bribery scheme involving traffic violations.

The officer allegedly contacted drivers to demand payments ranging from 250 to 700 euros in exchange for returning confiscated license plates, driving licenses, and documents, and for suppressing traffic citations so they would not be forwarded to tax authorities or municipalities. To give the transactions a veneer of legitimacy, the officer used official service stamps on envelopes containing the cash.

The scheme was uncovered after a driver reported being asked for 700 euros. During a sting operation, the officer was arrested while receiving a 350-euro installment. Investigations at his office led to the seizure of 800 euros in envelopes from other drivers, and evidence suggested he had previously collected 1,280 euros from additional individuals in August 2026. The officer has been referred to an investigating magistrate.
