Criminal investigations and arrests in Greece
Overview
Recent law enforcement actions in Greece have addressed distinct criminal activities involving fraud and corruption. In Phthiotis, police uncovered four fraud cases targeting elderly citizens that resulted in losses exceeding 95,000 euros during August. Perpetrators posing as fake accountants visited victims at home, claiming they faced immediate tax penalties to convince them to hand over cash and valuables. Two suspects linked to different criminal groups have been identified, and the cases have been submitted to the Lamia Court of First Instance. In Volos, an officer at the Transport Department was arrested for bribery, abuse of power, and issuing false statements. Investigators found the officer had been demanding payments between 250 and 700 euros to return confiscated driver’s licenses and license plates, while also suppressing traffic citations. Following his arrest during a sting operation, a 42-year-old officer has been released under restrictive conditions, including a 1,000-euro bail and a ban on leaving the country. New evidence has emerged regarding the Volos case, as surveillance footage authorized by the Prosecutor of Appeals in Thessaloniki reportedly captured a meeting within the Volos Police Station. The footage allegedly shows the officer receiving 350 euros from a Pakistani national in a brown envelope to settle a traffic offense. Defense lawyers have argued the actions did not constitute permanent bribery or embezzlement, characterizing the situation as the officer ‘borrowing’ from the public treasury with the intention to eventually restore the funds. The defense also cited the officer’s long years of service and remorse. While the legal investigation continues, the police service has initiated disciplinary proceedings. Separately, authorities are scrutinizing the tax records of doctors at a clinic in Kolonaki following the death of Giorgos Mazonakis.
