Greek police officers protest economic hardship in Athens
Hundreds of police officers held a mass protest on Thursday outside the former Police Academy on Mesogeion Avenue. The demonstration was organized following a joint call by the Police Officers' Unions of Athens and Thessaloniki.
Participants included officers from Athens and Thessaloniki, representatives from various regional unions, special guards, border guards, and retirees. Protesters used slogans, banners, and horns to express indignation over their current living conditions and economic hardships.
Theodoros Fukas, the organizing secretary of the Athens Police Officers' Union, stated that officers are facing economic suffocation. He highlighted that with salaries of approximately 1,000 euros, officers struggle to cover basic necessities such as rent and general living expenses in major cities like Athens and Thessaloniki. The protesters are demanding that both natural and political leadership provide immediate solutions to ensure their dignity and livelihood.
