Greek police union labor and economic disputes
Overview
Greek police unions have raised several grievances regarding equipment, staffing, and labor conditions. Initially, unions in Athens and Thessaloniki demanded the implementation of body-worn cameras and vehicle surveillance systems to increase transparency and protect officers, noting that existing legal frameworks and previous tenders have not been effectively utilized.
Following these demands, labor organizations reported severe staffing shortages and deteriorating working conditions. In Kilkis, unions cited significant personnel deficits caused by unreplaced retirements and forced transfers. Concerns were also raised regarding 12-to-14-hour shifts and potential violations of labor laws.
On October 15, 2026, the focus of the unrest expanded to include economic grievances. Hundreds of officers, including representatives from Athens, Thessaloniki, special guards, border guards, and retirees, held a mass protest outside the former Police Academy on Mesogeion Avenue. Organized by the Police Officers' Unions of Athens and Thessaloniki, the demonstration addressed the rising cost of living.
Theodoros Fukas, the organizing secretary of the Athens Police Officers' Union, stated that officers are facing ‘economic suffocation.’ He noted that with salaries of approximately 1,000 euros, officers struggle to cover basic necessities such as rent and general living expenses in major cities. Protesters are demanding immediate solutions from both natural and political leadership to ensure their dignity and livelihood.
