Greek police record 656 traffic violations in Crete after 1,783 vehicle checks

Coordinated police operations were carried out across the Crete region on 13 June 2026. Authorities inspected 1,783 vehicles and 2,075 individuals. The checks resulted in 656 confirmed violations of the Greek Road Traffic Code and the immobilisation of 86 vehicles.

The most common offences were failure to wear a seat‑belt (24), driving under the influence of alcohol (37), not wearing a helmet (44), speeding (38), and a range of other infractions including mobile‑phone use while driving and illegal overtaking. In addition, nine separate violations relating to drug possession, illegal weapons, animal‑cruelty statutes, unauthorised outdoor trade, public‑order disturbances and lack of health certificates led to the arrest of 16 people.

The police said the operations aim to curb traffic accidents and reinforce public safety throughout the island.
