Greek police report extensive traffic checks and low accident rates in Crete and West Macedonia

On 3 June 2026 the Crete regional police unit carried out coordinated road‑traffic checks in the Lasithi area. Officers inspected 628 vehicles, recorded 427 violations and immobilised ten vehicles for offences such as driving under the influence, worn‑out tyres and lack of a driving licence. The most common breaches involved non‑use of seat belts (11), helmets (9), speed limits (28) and illegal manoeuvres (32).

In May 2026 the West Macedonia police department published its monthly road‑safety report. The region recorded two traffic accidents, matching the same figure for the previous year, with no fatalities or serious injuries. Three people suffered minor injuries. Police documented 259 traffic violations, the largest categories being excessive speed (1,023), professional‑vehicle offences (891) and illegal manoeuvres (115). Other breaches included failure to wear seat belts, helmets, driving under the influence and using a mobile phone while driving.
