Greek police record over 2,600 helmet violations in nationwide crackdown

During the week of 29 June to 5 July 2026, the Greek Police continued its "Zero tolerance for non‑use of helmets" campaign across the country. A total of 22 081 traffic checks were carried out, confirming more than 2 680 violations of the mandatory helmet rule for motorcyclists, three‑wheelers, ATVs and light electric vehicles.

Regional figures included 269 offenses on the Ionian islands (126 in Corfu, 75 in Zakynthos, 41 in Lefkada and 27 in Kefalonia), 122 violations in Thessaly, 56 in Central Macedonia, 269 in the South Aegean, 903 in Attica and numerous smaller counts elsewhere. In Western Macedonia only three violations were recorded among light electric vehicle users, while the campaign in the islands of the Ionian group alone logged 269 breaches.

Under the new Road Traffic Code (Law 5209/2025), each offender faces a €350 fine and a 30‑day driving licence suspension; passengers receive a €350 fine, and light‑vehicle operators a €30 fine, with harsher penalties for repeat offences. The operation aims to shift driver behaviour rather than merely issue penalties, positioning the helmet as a vital life‑saving device.
