Greek electricity provider DEHDE warns of phone scams impersonating staff

The Public Power Corporation (DEHDE) issued a consumer alert after recent arrests of criminal groups involved in telephone fraud. Scammers call from unknown mobile numbers, claim to act on behalf of DEHDE or other authorities, and cite "high bills" or request details about household appliances such as air‑conditioners. Their goal is to extract cash, valuables or precious items by arranging in‑person checks.

DEHDE stressed that it never requests money, cash, or valuable items, and it does not conduct inspections via phone calls from unknown numbers. It advised callers to refuse sharing personal or financial information, decline any scheduled visits, and report suspicious calls. Customers can verify any request by contacting the official DEHDE hotline at 800 400 4000.

The Regulatory Authority for Waste, Energy and Water (RAAEU) echoed the warning, emphasizing that neither DEHDE staff nor employees of affiliated energy companies will ever request such payments or valuables, and urging the public to avoid disclosing information over the phone and to notify the police of any dubious incidents.
