Greece's PosoKanei platform sparks political debate over inflation
The Ministry of Development launched the free digital platform PosoKanei (posokanei.gov.gr) to let Greek consumers compare prices of around 10,000 grocery items across major supermarket chains such as Galaxias, Sklavenitis, AB Vasilopoulos, Lidl and others. In its first weeks more than 175,000 citizens used the service, creating personal shopping lists and viewing total basket costs per chain.
Data from the platform reveal large price gaps for identical products – for example, eggs priced at €0.86 in one store and €2.85 in another – prompting accusations of a two‑speed market and possible cartel‑like pricing.
Opposition parties, notably PASOK, criticised the government’s handling of inflation, with spokesperson Kostas Tsoukalas stating that the platform “informs citizens how much they lose from their salary because of the overpriced basic basket” and labels it “the digital confirmation of failed anti‑inflation measures.”
Government officials defend the tool, with Development Minister Takis Theodorikakos calling PosoKanei “a platform for consumer awareness” and saying it adds transparency to the market, though Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis acknowledges that a single platform cannot solve high prices alone.
