Greece celebrates the Dormition of the Mother of God

Greece and the Orthodox Christian community are celebrating the Dormition of the Mother of God, a major religious feast often referred to as the ‘summer Easter’. The holiday is marked by widespread religious services, pilgrimages, and cultural festivities across various regions.

In Nisyros, large crowds of pilgrims gathered at Panagia Spiliani, while in Neapoli, celebrations included religious services followed by musical programs and traditional customs. In Kastoria, a solemn procession of the Holy Icon of Panagia Porphyras took place, involving a boat journey across Lake Kastoria. Other significant celebrations were noted in Paros at the Panagia Ekatontapyliani shrine and at the Makellaria Monastery in Kalavryta.

The feast holds deep spiritual significance, representing the transition of the Virgin Mary to heaven and offering hope to the faithful. Beyond the religious ceremonies, the day is characterized by local panegyris, traditional music, and community gatherings throughout the Greek islands and mainland.
