Greek Orthodox Dormition of the Theotokos 2026

Overview

In August 2026, the Greek Orthodox Church marked the Dormition of the Theotokos, a major feast often called the ‘Summer Easter.’ The celebration commemorates the death and assumption of the Virgin Mary, drawing millions of faithful to monasteries and churches across Greece, North Macedonia, Romania, and Bulgaria for special liturgies, fasting, and processions. Preparation for the August 15 feast includes a two-week period known as the Dormition Fast. In North Macedonia, this involves specific dietary restrictions, such as abstaining from oil from Monday to Friday. In Romania, traditions include the blessing of seasonal crops, the sharing of ‘pomana’ to honor the deceased, and significant pilgrimages, such as the walk from Gherla to Nicula Monastery. To manage increased movement, security forces in Romanian counties—including Gorj, Satu Mare, Brașov, Hunedoara, Maramureș, and Bihor—have mobilized police and gendarmes to monitor religious sites and ensure public safety.

As the feast day arrived, celebrations intensified. In Greece, widespread pilgrimages occurred at sites such as the island of Tinos, the Panagia Soumeli in Veria, and Panagia Ekatontapyliani in Paros. Specific regional observances included large crowds at Panagia Spiliani in Nisyros and musical programs in Neapoli. In Kastoria, a solemn procession of the Holy Icon of Panagia Porphyras featured a boat journey across Lake Kastoria. On August 15, festivities continued in Symi, where crowds gathered at the historic Church of Panagia tou Kastrou for Great Vespers, the Artoklasia, and the blessing of the ‘kolyva’. In Rethymno, Crete, festivities were held at the Holy Monastery of Timiou Prodromou and the Panagia Charekiani shrine. In Messenia, the Monastery of Vulkanou and the Monastery of Demiovi hosted ceremonies, including a procession of the Holy Icon of Panagia of Vulkanio on Mount Ithomi. In Cyprus, monasteries in the Paphos region also held celebrations to mark the feast day.
