Greece's retail stores open Sunday July 19 as summer sales launch

Retail stores across Greece opened on Sunday 19 July, marking the first Sunday of the summer‑sales period. Under current legislation Sunday trading is optional; most chains follow a suggested schedule of 11:00 – 20:00, with smaller shops typically closing around 18:00. Lidl operates all its outlets from 11:00 to 20:00, while other chains such as Sklavenitis and Masoutis run selected locations with similar hours.

Industry estimates expect total sales of €7 – 7.4 billion, a 2 %‑5 % rise compared with the previous year, driven by tourist traffic and discounts. The Hellenic Confederation of Commerce and Entrepreneurship reminded retailers to display the previous price for each discount.

At the same time, the private‑sector employees’ union OIUE called a 24‑hour nationwide strike, demanding a protected Sunday rest day. Demonstrations were held in Athens, Thessaloniki, Patras and other cities, with workers pressing for a collective bargaining agreement and better wages. The protest added a labour‑rights dimension to the commercial activity on the day.
