Greek ministry pays €4.2 million to farmers for disease‑killed livestock

The Greek Ministry of Rural Development and Food approved compensation of €4,218,469 for 176 livestock farms whose animals were culled under veterinary measures against ovine pest ("ευλογιά") and the so‑called afthodous pyretos. The payments cover 75,316 animals and will be transferred to the recipients' bank accounts within one to two business days via the Bank of Greece.

The compensation is split into €1,378,057 for the ovine pest, affecting 103 farms and 58,031 animals, and €2,840,412 for the afthodous pyretos, affecting 73 farms and 17,285 animals. The affected regions include Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, Attica, Epirus, Thessaly, Central Macedonia, the South Aegean, the Peloponnese and Lesbos in the North Aegean.

Deputy Minister of Rural Development and Food Thanasios Kavvadias said the fourth payment demonstrates the state's commitment to support the livestock sector, protect animal capital and sustain farmers' income while reinforcing bio‑security measures.
