Greek Shipping Minister Vasilis Kikilias Highlights Sector's Economic Impact and Security Measures

Shipping Minister Vasilis Kikilias said Greek‑owned vessels account for about 60% of European and 20% of global shipping, generating roughly 8‑9% of Greece’s GDP and around 200,000 well‑paid jobs. He stressed that the industry underpins energy costs, inflation and the cost of living, noting its strategic role in international trade where 80‑90% of global commerce moves by sea.

Kikilias also announced that ferry ticket prices have not been raised this year, and the government has injected €60 million to support inter‑island services. He highlighted a recent coast guard operation that intercepted a human‑smuggling ring involving Greek and Cypriot perpetrators, using seven vessels and a helicopter.

The minister linked the sector’s strength to broader economic development, including shipbuilding, yachting, marinas and tourism, and called for continued investment in port infrastructure to boost local economies.
