Greek Stock Market Surges on MSCI Rebalancing and DEI Trading Spike

The Athens Stock Exchange saw heightened activity as MSCI index rebalancing prompted a surge in portfolio adjustments. Daily turnover topped €1 billion, with the state‑owned utility DEI alone accounting for roughly €244 million of the volume. The general index showed mixed movement, recording a 0.91% loss in one session and a 1.03% gain in another, while the high‑cap index fell about 1%.

Bank stocks led the gains; Eurobank rose 5%, Alpha Bank 3.5%, and other lenders added 2–3% each. Heavy‑weight industrials such as Viohalco and Motor Oil also posted double‑digit increases. Conversely, shares of Eurobank and other banks were among the biggest decliners in the earlier session. Analysts noted that, despite short‑term volatility, the market’s upward trajectory could continue as MSCI‑driven fund flows persist.

The rebound in trading volume and price movements reflects broader European market optimism, even as geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and a rumored US‑Iran agreement briefly rattled investors.
