Greek students urged to manage exam stress and nutrition for better performance

Examination periods in Greece are causing heightened anxiety for many students and their families. Experts explain that test anxiety is a natural physiological response that can become detrimental when it leads to symptoms such as stomach tightness, headaches, rapid heartbeat, sleep disturbances, irritability, and difficulty concentrating. They advise teens to break study sessions into manageable chunks, take regular breaks, discuss their feelings, maintain healthy sleep, diet, and exercise habits, and avoid excessive comparison with peers. Parents are encouraged to provide a calm environment, listen without immediate judgment, focus on effort over results, and promote a balanced approach to studying and rest.

Nutrition is also highlighted as a key factor for sustained mental performance. A balanced breakfast with whole‑grain carbohydrates, protein, and healthy fats supplies steady glucose to the brain. Omega‑3‑rich foods like fish, walnuts, and chia seeds support neuron health, while B‑vitamins and selenium help combat stress. Small, frequent meals and regular hydration prevent fatigue and maintain concentration. Limiting large, heavy meals and excessive caffeine is recommended, and a modest amount of dark chocolate can boost mood.

Together, these strategies aim to reduce exam‑related stress and improve cognitive function during the Panhellenic examinations.
