Greek summer theatre tours ancient plays to historic venues

The National Theatre of Greece is presenting its third‑year "Know the Ancient Theatres of Greece" programme, supported by the Ministry of Culture and the DIATOM association. The production "Thrasymata: Euripides" brings fragments of the playwright’s lost works to ancient venues in Macedonia, Epirus, Central Greece and Crete, with performances scheduled for early July and a week‑long run in Crete from late August to early September.

The State Theatre of Northern Greece (KTHBE) has outlined its 2026 summer season, featuring several high‑profile productions. "The Bacchae" – a co‑production directed by Javor Gardev with the British group The Tiger Lillies – will premiere in Epidaurus on 11‑12 July and then tour Greece, Cyprus and Bulgaria. The classical comedy "Lysistrata", translated by Konstantinos Bouras and directed by Astéris Peltékis, opened on 30 June at the Theatre of the Forest and will also appear at the Athens Epidaurus Festival. An Italian staging of Sophocles’ "Oedipus Tyrant" will be presented in Thessaloniki, underscoring the programme’s focus on themes of power, war, gender equality and Balkan artistic collaboration.
