Greek supermarket price‑cut initiative launches Aug 31 to curb food costs
The Independent Authority for Market Surveillance and Consumer Protection (AAEA&PK) has introduced a national programme that will require participating supermarkets to lower the regular shelf price of 12 essential product categories by 5 % to 20 %. The discounts, which are voluntary for retailers, apply to items such as meat, dairy, bread, pasta, rice, oil, baby food, coffee, sweets and household goods. Reductions must be reflected in the listed price, not as temporary promotions, and will be marked on shelves for consumer visibility.
The scheme starts on 31 August 2026 and runs until 31 December 2026, with each product remaining in the programme for at least two months. Retailers submit proposals by barcode to the authority, which evaluates them for genuine consumer benefit. The initiative aims to ease household budgets by delivering lasting price cuts on high‑consumption goods.
