Greek supermarkets post record sales growth and kick off summer discount season
Retail sales in Greek supermarkets surged in May, with Nielsen data showing a 7.1% increase in turnover and a 4.7% rise in sales volume – the strongest performance in the past five years. The growth is attributed to consumers turning to larger stores for lower prices amid reduced disposable income and higher costs linked to the Middle East conflict.
The summer discount period is set to begin on Monday, 13 July 2026, and will run through 31 August. Stores may optionally open on the first Sunday of the period, 19 July, from 11:00 to 18:00. New rules require clear display of previous and reduced prices, with specific labeling requirements when discounts cover a majority of products.
