Greek tax authority seizes 12,300 L of illicit diesel from ship in Volos

Inspectors from the customs department of the Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE) conducted a targeted maritime check at the port of Volos. They boarded a truck‑ship flying the flag of Saint Christopher and Nevis that had declared metal cylinders as cargo.

During a physical measurement of the fuel tanks, the team discovered an excess of 10.4 metric tons – 12,280 liters – of undeclared diesel. The quantity was not covered by any customs or commercial paperwork, a method commonly used by fuel‑smuggling rings to create hidden reserves for illegal market sale.

The authorities immediately prohibited the vessel’s departure, seized the entire illicit fuel stock and levied customs duties amounting to €8,855.76. Further investigations are under way to identify additional participants in the smuggling circuit.
