The Independent Authority for Public Revenue (AADE) carried out the first large‑scale on‑site audit of agricultural subsidies in Greece, targeting 195 livestock farmers in the municipality of Mylopotamos, Crete (the wider Zonia area). Fifty‑eight AADE inspectors, supported by ELAS and the Hellenic Police, notified the farmers only a few hours before the checks. Seventy‑five farmers (40 % of the sample) attended; violations were identified for 22 of them through a special algorithm that cross‑referenced AADE’s server data. Those 22 face penalties that can include loss of their subsidies. The remaining 120 non‑attending farmers will lose their 2025 subsidy applications, be re‑audited in 2026, and any 2025 payments already made are deemed unlawfully paid and will be reclaimed. The average herd size examined was 322 sheep/goats, and a full inspection of a 300‑animal herd requires about four hours with two inspectors. AADE director George Pitsilis said the checks send a clear message that subsidies must reach those who truly deserve them. The operation is part of the Action Plan of the Hellenic Republic with the European Commission.
