Greek theatre events: Alcestis at Dion and Mercuries 2026 festival
The National Theatre of Greece presents Euripides’ ‘Alcestis’, directed by Dimitris Karantzas, at the Dion Ancient Theatre on August 22. The production is described as a modern parable with strong political undertones, exploring themes of sacrifice, gender, and social responsibility through a blend of music, movement, and acrobatics.
Additionally, the 32nd ‘Mercuries 2026’ festival begins in the municipality of Neapoli-Sykies, running from August 22 to September 1, 2026. Held at the ‘Manos Katrakis’ Open Theatre of Sykeon, the festival features a diverse program including works by Giuseppe Massa, Yasmina Reza, Lorca, Shakespeare, and Aristophanes. The event, inspired by the vision of Melina Merkouri, aims to promote cultural decentralization in Northern Greece through various theatrical stages and regional theaters.
