Greek theatrical performances and festivals
Overview
The National Theatre of Greece is presenting several significant productions. As part of the 55th Olympus Festival, the theatre staged Euripides’ tragedy, Alkestis, at the Ancient Theatre of Dion on August 22. Directed by Dimitris Karantzas, the production is a “modern political parable” that uses music, movement, and acrobatics to explore themes of gender, power, and social responsibility.
In addition to the Dion performance, the National Theatre is staging a modern production of ‘Alcestis’ at the ‘Eirini Pappá’ Athens School. Also scheduled for late August is ‘The Woman of Zakynthos | Dialogue in the Ruins of Mesolonghi’, directed by Manos Karatzogiannis. A co-production with the Municipal Theater of Agrinio, this play is inspired by the works of Dionysios Solomos and commemorates the 200th anniversary of the Exodus of Mesolonghi, reflecting on historical struggles for independence.
Concurrently, the 32nd ‘Mercuries 2026’ festival is taking place from August 22 to September 1 in the municipality of Neapoli-Sykies. Held at the ‘Manos Katrakis’ Open Theatre of Sykeon, the festival features works by authors such as Shakespeare, Aristophanes, Giuseppe Massa, Yasmina Reza, and Lorca. Inspired by the vision of Melina Merkouri, the event seeks to promote cultural decentralization in Northern Greece through various regional theaters.
