Greek cultural institutions announce 2026-2027 theatre programs

Major Greek cultural institutions have unveiled their artistic programming for the 2026-2027 season.

The National Theatre of Greece is focusing on a diverse ecosystem of creators and international collaborations. Its two main venues, the Schiller Building and the Rex Theatre, will be fully operational, with the Rex Theatre reopening following renovations funded by the Recovery and Resilience Fund.

The Piraeus Municipal Theatre has announced a repertoire centered on the themes of “Kindness, Care, and Justice.” Highlights include a production of Lars von Trier’s “Dogville” directed by Aris Biniaris and a Molière play, “Le Malade Imaginaire,” directed by Yiannis Bezos and starring Spyros Papadopoulos—marking a reunion for the two actors after three decades. The theatre is also emphasizing contemporary Greek writing and community engagement through its “What I Believe” project.

Other notable cultural events include the return of the production “Odyssey” by Yuli Iliopoulou at the Piraeus 131 Theatre, aimed at children and adolescents, and the performance of Euripides’ “Medea” at the University of Patras as part of the “Welcome to UP 2026” program.
