Greek towns tighten water use and arrange transport amid shortages

The mayor of Monemvasia, Herakles Triheilis, announced that the municipal water supply may be used only for drinking. He prohibited its use for irrigation of crops, olive groves, large lawns or trees, as well as washing of public sidewalks, vehicles and filling swimming‑pool tanks without a special permit. Triheilis called on local councilors and the deputy mayor to organise a tour of villages to inform residents about the need to conserve water, noting that the municipality is increasingly reliant on deep bore‑holes and warns of possible salt‑water intrusion.

In the northern part of Zakynthos, owners of public‑use water‑truck fleets thanked the board of the DEUAZ (Water Supply Authority) for approving a contract to transport water to mountainous settlements such as Agios Nikolaos Voulimos, Schoinári, Laperda and Ano Vólimes. Citing Law 5039/2023, they said the trucks are the appropriate means to protect public health and expressed readiness to provide the service promptly.
