Greek traffic police issue over 2,300 citations in nationwide road safety checks

During a week‑long operation (22‑29 June 2026) the Traffic Directorate of the Hellenic Police conducted massive road checks across Attica and the rest of Greece. In Attica, 25,938 alcohol tests were performed, uncovering 217 violations and leading to 27 driver arrests, including 10 for alcohol‑related offences. The overall positive rate for the alcohol tests was 0.84%, and 702 vehicles were immobilised.

Across the country, 20,820 checks recorded more than 2,310 traffic violations. The most common infractions involved two‑wheeler drivers (1,391 citations) and passengers (246 citations), as well as violations by professional delivery riders and ATV drivers. The campaign also highlighted the new Road Code (Law 5209/2025), which imposes stricter penalties for failing to wear helmets, including fines of €350 and licence suspensions.

The police said the operations will continue with the same intensity to reinforce compliance with traffic safety regulations.
