Greek Transport Minister Christos Dimas Announces Thessaloniki Metro Extension to Kalamaria

Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Christos Dimas told the 7th Balkan Forum that the Thessaloniki Metro will be extended to the Kalamaria district within weeks, adding five new stations. He said the existing metro line has already cut vehicle traffic in the city centre by more than 15% over the past 16 months and the extension is expected to further ease congestion.

Dimas also reported that the Flyover project is over 53% complete and will double the capacity of the regional road from about 5,000 to 10,000 vehicles per hour once finished. Additionally, a public‑private partnership will deliver 17 new schools in Central Macedonia—16 of them in Thessaloniki—with a 25‑year maintenance contract to keep the facilities in high condition. The minister highlighted the strategic importance of northern Greece’s ports and transport corridors within the EU’s new maritime and logistics strategy.
