Greek university rectors establish AI integration roadmap
Thirteen rectors of major Greek public universities are establishing guidelines for the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into higher education. Ahead of the new academic year, these leaders are addressing how AI tools, such as ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini, should be utilized within lecture halls and research environments.
The rectors emphasize the need for responsibility, transparency, equity, and academic ethics. They aim to promote critical thinking over rote memorization, expressing concern over a recent MIT report suggesting that unregulated AI use could lead to ‘cognitive conditioning’ or an ‘illusion of learning.’
To address these challenges, Greek universities are developing a set of best practices and actions. These will be discussed at upcoming Rectors' Conferences, chaired by the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, to create a unified ‘roadmap.’ The consensus among educators is that AI integration is not merely a technological issue but an educational one, requiring changes in how students complete assignments, are assessed, and examined.
