Green roof technology and urban climate adaptation projects

Green roof installations are gaining popularity as a method for enhancing building sustainability and insulation. These ecological upgrades provide thermal benefits, keeping buildings cooler in summer and retaining heat in winter, while also protecting roof membranes from UV radiation and temperature fluctuations.

Successful implementation requires careful planning regarding structural load-bearing capacity and specific layering, including root-resistant foils, drainage layers, and specialized substrates. Unlike standard garden soil, these substrates must be lightweight yet water-retentive, often utilizing mineral components like lava or pumice.

In Graz, artist and architect Markus Jeschaunig is implementing a specific project titled ‘Expanded Garden’ on the rooftop terrace of the Iron House at Kunsthaus Graz. This installation integrates plants, water, and architecture to function as a natural air conditioning system, aiming to demonstrate how urban spaces can mitigate heat through sustainable design.
