Specific architectural projects, such as the ‘Expanded Garden’ in Graz, demonstrate how integrated plant and water systems can function as natural air conditioning.

Newer technical solutions are expanding the ‘sponge city’ principle through functional surface designs. These include green joint systems in concrete or stone that allow rainwater to be stored, evaporate, or seep into the ground, improving microclimates in paved areas like parking spaces and public squares.
