Greenpeace activists detained after Bundaran HI protest

Six Greenpeace Indonesia activists were detained by police after scaling the Selamat Datang Monument at Bundaran HI in Jakarta on Tuesday, October 20, 2026. The activists unfurled banners criticizing the Prabowo-Gibran administration regarding the climate crisis, ecological disasters, and the rising cost of living.

The banners carried messages such as “Disasters are getting worse, life is getting harder, what is the government doing?” and “Handle the climate crisis, lower the cost of living.” Jeanny Sirait, a climate justice campaigner for Greenpeace Indonesia, stated the action aimed to highlight how extreme weather and ecological disasters, such as forest fires in Kalimantan, negatively impact the economy and the lives of vulnerable workers, farmers, and fishermen.

Authorities from the Central Jakarta Metro Police, along with TNI personnel, removed the banners around 08:10 WIB. Following the removal, several activists were taken to the Polda Metro Jaya Biddokkes Clinic for medical evaluation. Central Jakarta Metro Police Chief Kombes Reynold EP Hutagalung noted that an ambulance was provided for evacuation after an activist appeared weak during the descent. The activists are expected to be taken to the Mapolda Metro Jaya headquarters for further questioning.
