Grenada delegation visits Punta Cana to study sargassum management

A delegation from Grenada visited Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, to study strategies and technologies used to manage sargassum seaweed. The visit aimed to learn how to mitigate the impact of these algae blooms on Caribbean coasts, which affects marine ecosystems, fishing, and tourism.

During the exchange, Grenadian representatives observed various interception and management mechanisms, including marine barriers, collection systems, and pumping solutions. The delegation engaged with the Fundación Grupo Puntacana, Desmi, and Bois d’Arc to understand practical applications in a major tourist destination. Discussions also explored the potential for repurposing the collected sargassum into new resources to reduce environmental impact and create economic opportunities.
