Caribbean sargassum management and valorization

Overview

Efforts to manage sargassum seaweed in the Caribbean have transitioned from bilateral knowledge exchanges to large-scale international summits. Initially, a delegation from Grenada visited Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic to study specific interception and management technologies, such as marine barriers and collection systems, to mitigate impacts on tourism and marine ecosystems.

This focus on practical management expanded into a broader regional strategy during the 4th EU-Caribbean Global Gateway Conference in Cancún. This summit brought together approximately 350 representatives from 45 countries to discuss the industrial management and valorization of sargassum. The objective has shifted toward creating a regional market and a circular economy, aiming to transform the seaweed into a valuable raw material. This cooperation comes amid projections that sargassum levels could rise significantly, potentially reaching 80 million tons in the coming year.
