Grevena, Greece arrests 88‑year‑old for negligent wildfire

Greek fire officials detained an 88‑year‑old man after he sparked a vegetation fire while working with a wheel‑driven tool near the “Rachi” area of the Deskati municipal unit in Grevena on Saturday at 13:59. The suspect was taken into custody under the fire service’s immediate‑procedure protocol and fined €1,546.88.

From 1 January to 4 July 2026 the fire service recorded 516 administrative fines totaling €629,272.80 and made 156 arrests for fire‑related offences; 91.67 % of those arrests involved fires caused by negligence. The Directorate for Combating Arson Crimes continues heightened patrols and inspections, emphasizing that the overwhelming majority of fires arise from human carelessness and urging strict adherence to fire‑prevention measures.
