Battery energy storage systems expand globally to support renewable grids

The global battery energy storage system (BESS) sector is experiencing significant expansion and technological evolution to support renewable energy integration. In India, Crisil predicts the commissioning of 45-50 GWh of BESS capacity during the 2027 and 2028 fiscal years, though some projects face delay risks due to hardening battery prices and low tariffs.

In Europe, Statkraft and Greenvolt Power have signed a major 10-year optimization agreement in Poland, covering 400 MW of BESS capacity across two projects in Ełk and Turośń Kościelna. This is noted as the largest agreement of its kind in the EU. Additionally, Jinko ESS is advancing a 220MWh hybrid storage portfolio in Germany to enhance grid stability.

In the United States, GridStor has secured $220 million in financing to complete a 100 MW/400 MWh facility in Arizona. Meanwhile, the US grid has seen rapid growth, with battery capacity reaching approximately 52 GW by mid-2026. Technological advancements, such as grid-forming inverters, are becoming critical for maintaining stability as renewable shares increase.

In Poland, PGE Inwest 12 is progressing with the Młoty pumped-storage power plant project, intended to serve as a large-scale energy storage facility by 2030.
