Grimaldi Group takes delivery of new Grande Egitto car carrier

The Grimaldi Group has taken delivery of the Grande Egitto, a new Pure Car & Truck Carrier (PCTC) built by China Merchants Heavy Industries Jiangsu. This vessel is the group’s fourteenth ‘Ammonia Ready’ unit, designed to be converted to use ammonia as a zero-carbon alternative fuel.

The Grande Egitto measures 220 meters in length and 38 meters in width, with a gross tonnage of 95,534. It features 15 decks and a cargo capacity of 9,800 CEU. The ship is capable of transporting electric vehicles, conventional vehicles, and those powered by compressed natural gas (CNG).

To improve sustainability, the vessel utilizes various eco-friendly technologies, including 2,500 square meters of solar panels, a 5 MWh lithium battery system, and shore power capabilities (cold ironing) to eliminate emissions while in port. These features allow the ship to reduce fuel consumption by up to 50% compared to previous generations of car carriers. The vessel has received several class notations from RINA, including ‘Green Plus’ and ‘Green Star 3’.
