Grizzly yearling euthanized near Christina Lake

The B. C. Conservation Officer Service (BCCOS) euthanized a male grizzly yearling on August 27 near Christina Lake. This follows the deaths of the bear's mother and sibling earlier this month in Nelson.

The yearling had been relocated to an undisclosed location alongside its sister in an attempt to provide better access to natural food sources. However, the bear was spotted in the Christina Lake community, where it had become habituated to human food and showed no fear of people.

Wildlife biologist Garth Mowat noted that drought conditions in the B. C. Interior have resulted in poor berry crops, driving bears toward residential areas. Officials are urging residents to secure attractants, such as garbage and fruit trees, to prevent further human-wildlife conflicts. One remaining yearling from the family group is currently being monitored by conservation officers.
