Overview

Wildlife officials in British Columbia and Montana have recently euthanized grizzly bears following increased conflicts with human populations.

In British Columbia, a male grizzly yearling was euthanized near Christina Lake after becoming habituated to human food and showing no fear of people. This incident followed the deaths of the bear’s mother and sibling in Nelson earlier in the month. Biologists attributed the movement toward residential areas to drought conditions in the B.C. Interior, which have caused poor berry crops.

Similarly, in Montana, two young adult grizzly bears were euthanized in the upper Blackfoot Valley after a ten-day period of targeting grain and chicken coops. Officials noted that bear conflicts have increased this season because limited natural food sources, such as chokecherries, have driven bears to seek alternatives in populated areas.
