Groningen rail services disrupted by maintenance and Wunderline resumption

Rail travelers in the Groningen region face disruptions this weekend due to ProRail maintenance work. No trains will run between Groningen and Delfzijl, Eemshaven, or Zuidhorn on Saturday and Sunday. Arriva is deploying replacement buses for these routes, which will stop at all stations. Travelers should expect delays of 30 minutes or more, and connections may not be guaranteed.

Further disruptions are expected next week, with service cancellations affecting routes between Groningen, Delfzijl, Eemshaven, and Zuidhorn, as well as services to Winschoten, Bad Nieuwe Schans, and Veendam due to overnight work on October 1.

In broader regional news, the international rail line known as the ‘Wunderline’ is set to resume service on October 5. After nearly eleven years, a direct train will once again run from Groningen to Leer, Germany. While the long-term goal remains establishing a direct connection to Bremen, current service requires passengers to transfer at least once. The service must adhere to strict schedules to accommodate the opening of the Friesenbrücke bridge for maritime traffic.
