Public transport changes in Groningen and Drenthe

Public transport services in the Groningen and Drenthe regions are experiencing various adjustments and disruptions. In the Veendam area, direct bus connections to Zuidbroek were discontinued due to low ridership, requiring passengers to transfer in Muntendam where service frequency has been reduced. Infrastructure improvements on the N34 near Gieten, including new bus lanes and safety measures, were implemented to improve schedule reliability and safety.

Rail services in the region have also faced interruptions. ProRail maintenance work led to the suspension of train services between Groningen and Delfzijl, Eemshaven, and Zuidhorn, with Arriva providing replacement buses. Further overnight maintenance was scheduled for early October affecting routes to Winschoten, Bad Nieuwe Schans, and Veendam.

In a significant development for regional connectivity, the ‘Wunderline’ international rail line is scheduled to resume service on October 5. This restores a direct train connection between Groningen and Leer, Germany, after nearly eleven years, though passengers may still require transfers to reach destinations such as Bremen.
