Groningen Swim Challenge raises over 192,000 euros for cancer research

The twelfth edition of the Groningen Swim Challenge took place on Saturday, featuring hundreds of participants swimming various distances to raise funds for cancer research at the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG). To date, the event has raised over 192,000 euros.

The proceeds are designated for seven specific research projects and studies at the UMCG, including groundbreaking research into thyroid, lymphatic, breast, and uterine cancers. Additionally, the funds will support the purchase of two devices designed to better map the immediate environment of tumors during surgical procedures.

Participants competed in several categories, including the Junior Swim, the City Swim (with distances of 1, 2.1, 3.8, and 8 kilometers), and the Classic Swim. One of the most grueling challenges involved three teams attempting a 50-kilometer open-water swim from Lauwersoog to the city of Groningen. One such team, the ‘Groningse Aal’, consisted of four brothers, their father, and a friend, swimming in a relay format to reach the finish line in the Oosterhaven.
