Healthcare reorganizations in Italy face local opposition

Various regional healthcare reorganizations in Italy are facing local opposition. In Abruzzo, the Val Vibrata Hospital Committee has criticized a new emergency-urgency network plan, claiming the Val Vibrata area is being penalized with a lack of medicalized ambulance stations and resources.

In Tuscany, the ASL Toscana Sud Est decision to centralize surgical activities at the Misericordia Hospital in Grosseto has drawn criticism. Regional Councilor Lidia Bai described the lack of institutional consultation as “unacceptable,” while the Forza Italia party expressed concern that the move will reduce services in peripheral facilities like Massa Marittima, potentially impacting elderly populations in rural areas. Forza Italia has called for an immediate suspension of the project to allow for dialogue with local municipalities and healthcare workers.
