Italian regional health crisis deepens

Entities: Alessio Pio Coppolino · Region Calabria · Cagliari · Santissima Trinità Hospital · Volunteer Ambulance Association

Overview

In early July regional officials in Calabria and Sardinia warned of tens of millions of euros in deficits and the closure of an emergency department in a Sardinian town. By late July a 78‑year‑old Parkinson’s patient vanished from a geriatric ward in Crotone, highlighting staffing gaps, while a chronic shortage of ambulances forced reliance on costly private providers.

Volunteers at Santissima Trinità Hospital in Cagliari reported cramped, air‑condition‑less corridors and a “barell room” that fits only four stretchers. An ambulance operator said crews sometimes spend whole nights in the corridors, with patients and ambulances waiting for hours, a situation that jeopardises timely medical response and breaches the right to health.

A Corte dei Conti review of Calabria’s 2025 accounts showed an overall budget surplus but flagged persistent health‑sector vulnerabilities. Patient out‑mobility to other regions generates a negative balance of more than €329 million, underscoring systemic strain. In a separate incident, a 1½‑year‑old boy died on 22 July after being transferred to the Pugliese‑Ciaccio Hospital in Catanzaro; autopsy revealed a severe septic‑inflammatory process, and prosecutors ruled out hospital mismanagement while referring the case for further investigation and placing 38 children from a related childcare centre under health surveillance.

Together, these developments illustrate the shift from fiscal pressure to acute failures in patient safety, emergency response and infrastructure across Italy’s regional health systems.
