Lombardy requests state of emergency after severe storms

Severe weather across Lombardy has prompted President Attilio Fontana to request a state of emergency from Civil Protection Minister Nello Musumeci. The region has faced exceptional rainfall, with accumulations reaching 270 millimeters in the Orobie Alps and 260 millimeters near the Upper Lake Como.

Emergency services, including the Vigili del Fuoco, have conducted over 450 interventions. Significant damage includes the destruction of a bridge in Rino di Sonico due to a debris flow and flooding of the Oglio river in Malonno. In Val Camonica, 81 people were evacuated, while approximately 250 people were moved from a campsite in Isola di Fondra.

Infrastructure has been heavily impacted, with State Road 42 closed between Sonico and Malonno due to mud and debris. Authorities continue to work on restoring road connectivity and securing affected areas.
