2026 Italy storms intensify, broaden damage

Overview

From April through August 2026, Italy experienced a relentless series of severe weather events. Early spring hailstorms battered Modena’s crops, while Lombardy endured over 10,000 lightning strikes. In May, intense rain and hail devastated orchards in Bari and vineyards in the northeast. June saw surges of hail flattening crops in Mantova and a rare tornado in northern Rome. A late-June heat wave and catastrophic hailstorm in Avellino destroyed up to 100% of certain harvests, prompting calls for a state of natural disaster. July brought further storms to Bracciano, Reggio Emilia, Piedmont, and the Marche. In August, the pattern of violent weather continued. On 6 August, a storm with tornado-like winds struck southern Tuscia. On 10 August, severe thunderstorms in Cassino caused trees to fall on major roads. On 12 August, Benevento was hit by violent thunderstorms. During the night of 19-20 August, a violent storm swept through the Altopiano dei Sette Comuni, uprooting trees and causing power outages in the Vicenza area. Severe weather intensified in the Friuli Venezia Giulia region on 19 August, where rainfall reached 179 mm in Moggio Udinese and wind gusts hit 128 km/h on Monte Zoncolan. On 20 August, storms impacted Tuscany, with wind gusts of 110 km/h in Bocca d'Arno and a stadium wall collapse in Pescia. Extreme rainfall also caused widespread damage in Lombardy, with precipitation reaching up to 270 mm in the Orobie Alps. Following the August 20 storms, the Lombardy Region formally requested a national state of emergency. In Tuscany, President Eugenio Giani indicated he would propose a state of emergency for 15 to 20 municipalities. On 5 September, Giani declared a regional state of emergency following the severe storms of 20 and 21 August.
