Grottaglie Airport expansion sparks debate over passenger vs. industrial roles
A political debate has emerged regarding the future role of the Grottaglie Airport (M. Arlotta) in Puglia, Italy. The discussion centers on whether the facility should expand to include commercial passenger flights or remain dedicated to industrial, aerospace, and cargo operations.
Walter Fischetti, president of the Pro Aeroporto di Taranto-Grottaglie Committee, argues against limiting the airport to industrial use. He contends that a national airport with a 3,200-meter runway should not be deprived of passenger services due to regional competition. Fischetti characterizes the current push to restrict Grottaglie as a form of subordination to Brindisi rather than true regional complementarity.
Conversely, Massimiliano Oggiano, a Brindisi city councilor, defends the existing strategic division. He maintains that Puglia’s airport network is designed for specific roles: Brindisi serves as the passenger hub for Salento and the Ionian Arc, while Grottaglie is an international center for aerospace, logistics, and drones. Oggiano warns that introducing passenger flights at Grottaglie would cannibalize the user base of Brindisi and undermine the economic sustainability of the established industrial specialization.
