Grottaglie Airport functional role debate

Overview

Political debate has intensified regarding the future function of Grottaglie Airport in Puglia, Italy. Senator Mario Turco has called on the Italian government to approve scheduled commercial flights, suggesting the use of Public Service Charges to establish the site as a permanent passenger hub. Turco noted that the facility demonstrated its capacity during the Mediterranean Games and cautioned against leaving the new terminal unused.

This proposal has sparked a broader disagreement over whether the airport should serve passenger traffic or remain specialized for industrial, aerospace, and cargo operations. Walter Fischetti, representing the Pro Aeroporto di Taranto-Grottaglie Committee, argues that the airport’s 3,200-meter runway justifies passenger services and opposes limiting its role.

In contrast, proponents of the current strategic division, such as Brindisi city councilor Massimiliano Oggiano, argue that the regional network relies on specialization. Under this model, Brindisi serves as the passenger hub for the Ionian Arc, while Grottaglie is designated as an international center for logistics, drones, and aerospace. Oggiano warned that adding passenger flights to Grottaglie would ‘cannibalize’ the user base of Brindisi and threaten the economic sustainability of the existing industrial focus.
