Group14 Technologies to build first European battery material plant in Sagunto

Group14 Technologies has selected Sagunto, Spain, for the construction of its first European industrial plant for silicon battery materials. The facility, named BAM-4, will focus on producing the company’s proprietary SCC55 compound, a silicon and carbon material designed to replace graphite in battery anodes.

The plant is expected to have an initial capacity of 10 gigawatt hours (GWh) per year. According to project details, construction is slated to begin in 2028. The company anticipates creating approximately 200 jobs during the construction phase and maintaining a permanent workforce of between 150 and 200 employees once operational.

The SCC55 material aims to enable batteries with higher energy density and faster charging capabilities, potentially allowing for charges in under 10 minutes. Target applications include mobile phones, high-performance vehicles, and electric aircraft. The decision follows a 150 million euro capital increase that brings the company’s total Series D funding to over 665 million dollars.

Group14 cited Spain’s significant role in automotive manufacturing and proximity to battery production centers as key factors for the location. This expansion follows existing operations in South Korea and the United States.
